Safety Management System (published May 2006)

The SMS for QMRS was launched recently following board endorsement and staff training. The new system has been designed to compliment the systems within the mines sites. QMRS has long relied on the training from mines in their SMS and now QMRS has aligned a SMS with the mines.

This does not alleviate the obligation of Mines Rescue to meet and comply with the mine sites' SMS and the partnership with the industry is again reinforced in safety. "We need to walk the talk and champion the safety message" said Wayne Hartley, state manager for QMRS. "QMRS is a key player in setting the standards. As an emergency service provider and manager of the emergency message, we want to reflect with our team members the highest sense of safety standard without compromise".

QMRS recently conducted training in the QMRS Safety management System. Designed to compliment the mines system, it was a challenge to align the SMS with the 16 underground mines currently in the industry.

The new system developed from scratch was designed to compliment other SMS in the industry. Mr Hartley said " It has been a challenge to address these issue. It has been designed and documented to be a dynamic system. We have tried to appreciate the needs of the mines and the current workplace legislation we have to abide by, but the systems are compatible. Safety is something that QMRS reinforces in everything that we do - when you come to training there is a familiar focus in all we do - it compliments your mine site."
